Andy Robertson is not finished. Not for Liverpool. Not for Scotland. And definitely not in the Antti Niemi sense

2022 Andy Robertson is no longer available. But the next best thing may be... 2025 Andy Robertson

I don’t mind saying it: not since Arthur Albiston took that talkSPORT call about Antti Niemi getting overlooked for Scotland has there been a bigger misuse of the word ‘finished’.

Jamie Carragher had no idea the meme he was unleashing when he dropped the ‘leave the football before the football leaves you’ line last year, but it feels like it’s directed at a different player with every passing week. People absolutely love to tell you it’s over at the top level, and last season they were telling Andy Robertson all the fucking time.

It started exactly 11 months ago. Fulham were the visitors to Anfield and, with their astonishing early-season form, Arne Slot was on the verge of somehow running away with the title in his first season. You’ve forgotten about it now because they absolutely took the piss, but this time last year everyone was still pretty surprised how good Liverpool were after barely spending a penny in the summer.
